The Cast, Crew & Volunteers of GHOSTS 2012 Wow-ed All!

“Ghosts of Sotterley has grown into a major event for Sotterley because of the professional expertise and gifts of time and talents from so many,” stated Nancy Easterling, Executive Director. “We cannot possibly thank Dawna, James, Ming, Wesley, the entire cast and crew, and the many volunteers enough for what they do on Sotterley’s behalf.”

The wildly popular Ghosts of Sotterley - “1918: Influenza, War, and Restless Spirits” drew crowds to the site on October 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27, 2012. This year's script, brought to life by over 100 dedicated volunteers, has been hailed as spookily informative. Audiences were transported back to a time when Herbert Satterlee was in the process of restoring Sotterley, as the country battled the flu pandemic and dealt with the remains of the Great War.

Thanks to all who made the
2012 Ghosts of Sotterley
"1918: Influenza, War, and Restless Spirits"
an incredible success!

Official Sponsors: Ming and Dawna Diaz

Dawna Diaz
Director, Producer
Dawna has been actively involved in all aspects of the Ghosts of Sotterley for the past 10 years. She returns as Director and Producer for this year’s production. She hasn’t been off site for long, as she recently finished directing our War of 1812 living history events entitled, “The Choice – Risking Your Life for Freedom.” When not directing or performing on a stage, she can be found mediating or working her day job on base at Atlantic Test Range.

Ming Diaz
Makeup
Ming has been acting and doing tech since the 60's in middle school and there is no cure in sight. His constant enjoyment is working for people who want to play in their performances while giving audiences their best. His alter ego is being a clown and face-painter for children.

James LePore
Assistant Director, Playwright
Dedicated volunteer and local celebrity, James LePore returns as the Playwright and Assistant Director of the Ghosts of Sotterley for the fourth year. He is a working actor with an impressive resume, a talented graphic designer, a DJ on internet radio (www.phoenixintermedia.com), and is the Host of The Buzz on TV’s Metrocast Channel 10.

Wesley Thomas
Technical Director
This is Wesley's fourth year with the Ghosts of Sotterley. He has brought skills learned in the Navy and loves to play with all things technical. His day job is a test flight electronic/electrician on trainer jets and is always looking forward to the next year’s Ghosts of Sotterley.

Honoring Those of the Middle Passage - Prayer of Unity

“If the Atlantic were to dry up,
it would reveal a scattered pathway of human bones,
African bones marking the various routes
of the Middle Passage.”
~ John Henrik Clarke

“The auctioneer’s Maryland is the place
to witness the heartrending cruelties of
slavery, not merely in the infliction of the lash
on the back of the slave,
but there you see the iron of slavery
enter the soul of the slave.
There you see husband torn from his wife,
and the children torn from their parents.”
~ Frederick Douglass

“But if this part of our history could be told
in such a way that those chains of the past,
those shackles that physically bound us
against our wills could, in the telling,
become spiritual links that willingly bind us together
now and into the future,
then that painful Middle Passage could become ironically,
a positive connecting line to all of us whether
living inside or outside the continent of Africa….”
~ Tom Feelings

“You have discovered truths about your past.
You have confronted the beast
and in doing so have conquered it.
From now on your backs will be a little straighter,
you will hold your heads a little higher.
You have attained a dignity that no one
can ever diminish.”
~ Desmond Tutu

“There is no place where I can go,
or where you can go, and think about,
or summon the presences of,
or recollect the absences of
ones that made that journey.
There is no small bench by the road,
there is not even a tree scored and initialized
that I can visit, or you can visit
in Charleston, or Savannah, or New York,
or Providence, or the Ohio River, or better still,
on the banks of the Mississippi.”
~ Toni Morrison

Prayer of Unity

All praise to the Divine in us.
Praise to our ancestors and elders.
If a person does not know the past, then
the present and the future are not knowable.
Let the spirit of the ancestors help bring us
closer in unity and to our divinity.

On behalf of Historic Sotterley Plantation and the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, community members and leaders are invited to an ancestral remembrance ceremony on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Sotterley Plantation. This ceremony honors the people transported against their will from the Gold Coast of Africa who died in the Atlantic Ocean and also those who arrived during the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Owners of what was later to become known as Sotterley Plantation participated in the trans-Atlantic slave trade on the Patuxent River in the early 18th century. There is documentation of persons perishing during the passage and being thrown overboard. Some of those who survived the passage remained here, while others were shipped into Virginia. Sotterley’s owners maintained their wealth and property through enslaved labor for 165 years.

This project has the mission of identifying all middle passage ports, sponsoring remembrance ceremonies, and installing historical markers at 175 sites in North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Europe, officially designating the Atlantic Ocean as a sacred burial ground of African ancestors. Since August 23, 2012, remembrance ceremonies have been held in Baltimore and Annapolis. Sotterley is the final of three Maryland middle passage port sites. The next phase will be the installation of the historic markers.

Sotterley Plantation is a place where many African-Americans find their ancestors and this ceremony is intended to repair broken circles, heal, and bring us together. This project is a step to connect personally to our history at the places where African ancestors first arrived. The ceremony will include a historical narrative, prayers by diverse faith groups, drumming, and libation led by an Akan priest.

Through the CFC You Make a Difference!

We are pleased to announce that Historic Sotterley, Inc. has been selected as an approved organization for the Combined Federal Campaign, both of the National Capital Area (CFCNCA), and the St. Mary’s County Federal Campaign (STMCFC). CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign and internationally helps to raise millions of dollars each year.

Many federal employees participate in the Combined Federal Campaign each year, and this year for the first time they may designate Historic Sotterley, Inc. as their charity of choice. This can be done by indicating Sotterley’s five digit code of 13401 on their pledge form. All donations received through the CFC will go towards supporting Sotterley’s mission of preservation, interpretation, research and providing an outstanding educational resource to our community.

“Following the devastation of Hurricane Irene last year there is still much to be done at Sotterley,” states Nancy Easterling, Executive Director of Historic Sotterley, Inc. “and being selected to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign is truly an honor that can help us accomplish our many goals. It is a wonderful program, and we are thrilled to be one of the worthwhile charities chosen.”

The mission of the Combined Federal Campaign is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.
