Architectural Tour for SMCM Students

Sotterley Plantation welcomed the Historic Building Curator of Historic St. Mary's City, Peter Rivers, and a group of St. Mary's College of Maryland students for a unique tour experience yesterday afternoon. Sotterley's Restoration Manager, John O'Rourke, shared facts and findings on this architectural tour of the 1703 Plantation House. Entering through the original front door on the water side, students had the opportunity to see parts of the structure rarely seen. Glimpsing below floor boards and crawling into some tight spaces, they noted areas of original construction and ongoing restoration efforts.

Looking Good!

Thanks to Sotterley's Restoration Manager John O'Rourke and his crew, the Tool Shed (and The Necessary) now have beautiful roofs matching that of the Plantation House! Next time you are on-site, walk over to the gardens and see the improvements for yourself.
The roof work continues ... next stop ... the Corn Crib and the Warehouse.

New Look!

Standing Ovation for the Friends of Sotterley Acting Troupe!

It is an absolute pleasure to extend a HUGE Thank You to a group of very important people who are not only involved with bringing parts of Sotterley's history to life (with artistic license, of course), but are part of Sotterley's history.
This past Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, the Friends of Sotterley Acting Troupe hit a home run for the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours, with their outstanding performance of this year's script, "The Civil War at Sotterley - the Nation will rise again ... and so will the dead!" The cast and crew put in countless hours - all volunteer hours - making this such a phenomenal event for the audience numbering 1,098! In the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, we would like to thank these incredible Friends of Sotterley, who are most definitely friends:

Dawna Diaz
Director, Producer, Makeup
Dawna has been actively involved in all aspects of the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours for the past 6 years. She loves working with the creative technical genius of her husband. When not on a stage, she can be found Mediating or working her day job on base at Atlantic Test Range.

James LePore
Assistant Director, Playwright
This is the 2nd year James has written and assistant directed Sotterley’s Ghost Tour. He acts at the Three Notch Theatre, most recently in Neil Simon's Rumors, and does TV commercials, voiceover work, and DJ’s on BayNet Radio. James loves Sotterley and is honored to be a part of her history.

Ming Diaz
Technical Director, Makeup
Ming has been acting and doing tech since the 60's in middle school and there is no cure in sight. His constant enjoyment is working for people who want to play in their performances while giving audiences their best. His alter ego is being a clown and face-painter for children.

Wesley Thomas
Technical Director
This is Wesley's second year with the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours. He has brought skills learned in the Navy and loves to play will all things technical. His day job is as a test flight electronic/electrician on trainer jets and is always looking forward to the next Ghosts of Sotterley Tours.

Applause! Applause!

Less than two weeks ago, the Riverside WineFest 2010 was held at our magnificent site for its ninth year running - and what a success it was! I must apologize for not posting this sooner, but it has taken me this long to compile the list of everyone who played a role in making this event possible. My hope is that I did not leave off even a single name and/or organization. I also hope that every name is spelled correctly.

When I presented a hard copy of this list to the Executive Director, and she flipped through it page by page, we agreed that this visual was absolutely humbling. THANK YOU ALL for being part of the Sotterley Plantation history. Your generosity of time, talents, and contributions enables us to carry on the mission of this non-profit, National Historic Landmark:

to preserve, interpret, and research Sotterley Plantation’s diverse cultures and environments throughout its history, to serve as a public education resource, and to provide a cultural venue for the community.

Ghosts of Sotterley Tours 2010 - "The Civil War at Sotterley - The Nation will rise again ... and so will the dead!"

Final preparations in full swing for this year's Ghosts of Sotterley Tours! Tomorrow night (Thursday) is opening night and the Friends of Sotterley Acting Troupe, all volunteers, are tremendously psyched to present this year's historical dramatization entitled, "The Civil War at Sotterley - The Nation will rise again ... and so will the dead!"

The Nation is divided by the Civil War and the death toll is rising. Danger lurks at every turn, especially for Confederate sympathizers. While the state of Maryland voted to hold an official position of neutrality during the war, much of Southern Maryland took a pro confederate stance. Many residents, like the Briscoe family who owned Sotterley during this era, took great pains and often great risks to support the Confederate cause. The characters you will meet along the tour are all based on real people and the stories they have to tell are steeped in historical fact. Each scene will offer a different perspective during a difficult period in our Nation’s history, while entertaining and spooking visitors at the same time.

A Whole Lot of Spooky Going On!

“The Civil War at Sotterley – the Nation will rise again … and so will the dead!”

Ghosts of Sotterley Tours
Sotterley Plantation
October 14, 15 & 16, 2010
Tours run every ten minutes, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Now in its 10th year, the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours has been providing guests with a unique walking tour experience, combining historical drama (with artistic license) with a most creepy edge. Arriving at Sotterley Plantation by the spooky glow of a roaring bonfire, guests check in at the Warehouse. While awaiting their designated tour times, all are invited to enjoy the decadent treats for purchase from Mamelah’s Macaroons & More.

Once the tour time is called, there’s no turning back. And so begins the time-traveling event of the Halloween season! The Nation is divided by the Civil War and the death toll is rising. Danger lurks at every turn … especially for Confederate sympathizers, as were the owners of Sotterley during this era.

The “Friends of Sotterley” acting troupe promise even more thrills and chills than last year.
Raley, Watts & O’Neill Insurance and Financial Services is the official sponsor of the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!
