TEA for Ten!

Happy 70th Birthday, Kathy!
Out on the Portico lawn, a lovely group of 10 ladies celebrated a special birthday in style - Sotterley style! With absolutely no humidity, a soft breeze rolled up the hill from the Patuxent River, as this wonderful group of friends enjoyed High Tea. Raising their china cups with pinkies properly extended, they enjoyed delicious finger foods, cake, and each other's light-hearted company. How joyful to hear the giggles!
True, Sotterley is best known for her important educational programs, for her eight major annual events, for her tours of the Plantation House, Colonial Revival Gardens, and Slave Cabin, for being the site of many weddings and corporate events, but she extends herself to suit any occasion.
If you are interested in scheduling an intimate affair, such as this sweet afternoon birthday tea, or even a group tour with a luncheon, please contact Kim Husick, Office Manager and Coordinator of Southern Charm Extraordinaire!
For larger events requiring grande planning and keeping all the plates spinning in the air, with big picture flair, please contact Linda Tucker Jones, Event Manager (who even offers her services as a Wedding Planner )!

Speaker Series: Raymond Dobard, Ph.D.
“The Underground Railroad and Quilts”
Friday, August 27, 2010 7:00 p.m. in the Barn

The 2010 Speaker Series continues as Sotterley Plantation proudly partners with The Boeing Company in presenting Howard University Art and Art History professor Dr. Raymond Dobard. He has made a study of 19th century African-American quilts, noting that, like early Christian mosaics and frescoes, they often invoked Biblical scenes of redemption or, as he puts it, the “ultimate emancipation.”
Dr. Dobard co-authored Hidden in Plain View—A Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad with Jacqueline Tobin. This book documents their journey of discovery, linking the stories of Ozella McDaniels to other forms of hidden communication from history books, codes, and songs.
In addition to exhibiting his own quilts, Dr. Dobard served as a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Quilt Museum. He also served on the advisory boards of the Washington, DC Textile Museum and the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He is an advisor for the new African American Art Museum in Baltimore and serves as adjunct faculty member/Quilt Study Center Fellow to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He was a consultant/participant in the documentary on the Underground Railroad entitled “Safe Harbor: A Main Street Media Production.” His research on quilts, codes and the Underground Railroad continues with an eye towards another book entitled, By Way of Sandusky.
Because of the generous grant and continued support from The Boeing Company, Sotterley Plantation is able to offer this important community outreach, fulfilling its mission of serving as an educational resource and cultural venue while it seeks to preserve, interpret and research the plantation’s diverse cultures and environments through its history.
FREE to the public. Please call for Reservations: 301-373-2280.
