Hollywood, MD - Our 5th Annual Gala in the Garden is coming up on June 14th, 2014, and after what has been a long winter we are more than ready to “Mambo in Miami”! The Sotterley garden will resonate with distinctive South Beach Art Deco influences, the rhythms of the Miami Sound Machine and Buena Vista Social Club, plus exceptional Latin and Cuban infused cuisine! Prepare to be wow-ed by the incredible auction items for bid in both the Silent and Live Auctions, which could be yours!

Participation in this important fundraiser allows us to continue our mission of preserving, researching, and interpreting our diverse cultures and environments and to serve the world as an educational, cultural, and community resource.  While the Gala in the Garden supports a mission we all believe in, it’s also an opportunity to mix, mingle, and have a great time!

Make Mother's Day Memorable!

In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11, 2014, all mothers will receive a Guided Tour of our 1703 Plantation House at Sotterley Plantation for HALF PRICE on their special day!

From noon to 4 p.m., we welcome you and your mother to stroll the blooming Colonial Revival Gardens, walk the plantation grounds and nature trails, see the historic outbuildings including our original 1830’s Slave Cabin, or picnic out on the lawn while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Patuxent River. Top off the day with buying a memorable gift at the Sotterley Museum Shop, located in the Visitor Center. It will be a day she will never forget!

The War of 1812 Living History

at Sotterley Plantation

June 7 & 8, 2014

Sotterley Plantation’s War of 1812 Living History “The Choice” is now in its final year of the three year National bicentennial commemoration of this war. As a partner of the Raiders & Invaders event taking place in St. Mary’s County during the first weekend in June, showings of “The Choice” will take place at Sotterley Plantation on Saturday, June 7^th, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 8^th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance.

The war with the British brought hardship to the plantation but a chance at freedom for the enslaved. At this living history presentation you will meet the people who lived and labored at Sotterley during the summer of 1814.  Join us and be a part of the drama as Sotterley’s enslaved must make a difficult and daring choice. Do they escape or do they stay?  

What would you decide? 

This Living History event was written by Dale Jones of Making History Connections with costuming designed by Leon Wiebers of Loyola Marymount University. This event and its current production has been made possible by the generosity of the Maryland Humanities Council, Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium, and The Star Spangled 200.

Nature Lovers ~ Join Us!

 

Eagles, Earth Day and Sotterley! 

Saturday, April 19, 2014 

8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

 

Hollywood, MD - In conjunction with the Southern Maryland Audubon Society, Sotterley Plantation invites you to attend a bird-filled exploration of this scenic National Historic Landmark on the Patuxent River. Beginners are welcome! Usher in your Earth Day week with a bird-filled exploration on this scenic and historic property. Nesting Bald Eagles, meadowlarks, woodpeckers and waterfowl can be found on Sotterley’s extensive new trail system and habitats. There is no charge for this event, although donations are always appreciated!

 

Your leaders for the event are Michael Patterson and David Moulton. While not required, reservations are appreciated. If you have a question or would like to make a reservation, contact David at 240-278-4473.

Our Farmers Need More Growing Time!
~ The Sotterley Farmer’s Market ~

Sotterley has always had strong ties to our Southern Maryland farming community, having been a working farm during all of its 300 year existence. This year we will further strengthen these ties as we proudly announce the unveiling of the Sotterley Farmer’s Market – a producer only farmer’s market! Every Saturday between 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. running from May 24 through September 27, 2014, the public is invited to the Sotterley Plantation grounds to shop local.

After buying wonderful local produce we have, we hope our guests will also stay in order to take advantage of our site’s beauty, nature trails, and history. Visitors need only to check in at the Visitor Center, then they can enjoy themselves hiking and touring the site – and remember that Sotterley members get in free! And also new for 2014, your furry friends are welcome on our nature trails (on a leash, please)!

Sotterley is still currently accepting applications from quality local vendors interested in featuring only locally grown and produced products - vegetables, fruit, honey, eggs, oysters, and more. “The Civil War of 1812: Canada and the Chesapeake”

To call the War of 1812 a "civil war," now seems jarring because hindsight has distorted our perspective on the past. Given the later power and prosperity of the United States, we underestimate the fluid uncertainty of the post-revolutionary generation, when the new republic was so precarious and so embattled. We also imagine that the revolution affected a clean break between Americans and Britons as distinct peoples. In fact, the republic and the empire competed for the allegiance of the peoples in North America:    native, settler, and immigrant. Americans and Britons spoke the same language and conducted more trade with one another than with other nations, but their overlapping migrations and commerce generated the frictions of competition. The civil war proved fiercest in Upper Canada, where most of the settlers were newcomers from the United States. But partisan and racial divisions rendered the Chesapeake another theater of competition for local support by the British raiders and the American defenders. 

Because of the generous grant and continued support from The Boeing Company, Sotterley Plantation is able to offer this important community outreach, fulfilling its mission to preserve, research, and interpret Sotterley Plantation’s diverse cultures and environments and to serve the world as an educational, cultural, and community resource.

This event is FREE to the public.

The nurturing volunteers of the Sotterley Garden Guild have raised thousands of dollars in support of Sotterley Plantation and are also responsible for the maintenance of the exquisite Colonial Revival Garden. Their annual Plant Sale and Free Plant Exchange has grown in popularity year after year, so make sure you mark your calendar and join us! And don't forget to visit our gardens again and again to see the horticultural artistry of our amazing volunteers!

If you have been considering ways to be of service in the community, then look no further ~ Sotterley needs you! Volunteer opportunities at Sotterley are plentiful, as we welcome anyone interested in helping out! Our most critical seasonal needs are:
 

• Museum Shop / Visitor Center

• Interpreter

• Garden Guild
 

As a Museum Shop volunteer, yours is the first face visitors will see when they come to Sotterley Plantation. You will have the opportunity to sell our delightful wares and handle tour admissions, while making our visitors feel welcome. Interpreters will lead guided tours from room to room in the historic Plantation House and tell the rich story of our over 300 year old history to guests. Garden Guild volunteers help to maintain the magnificent Colonial Revival Garden, to the delight of visitors throughout the blooming months.
