Farmer's Market Heading to Cedar Lane!

In an effort to continue our community outreach through the Historic Sotterley “Growing for Good” program, our Farmer's Market is heading to a new location - the Cedar Lane Senior Living Community at 22680 Cedar Lane Court in Leonardtown. On Wednesdays beginning on June 26th and running through September 25th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we will have fresh in-season produce, eggs, local honey, and more.

 

Over the last five years, the Historic Sotterley “Growing for Good” program has donated over 50,000 pounds of produce to local food pantries. Now the program has yielded an opportunity to set up a weekly Farmer’s Market to sell fresh produce at the Cedar Lane Senior Living Community.

 

“Our friends at Cedar Lane have graciously invited us to set up a mobile farm stand to serve the valued seniors in our community, many of whom are unable to make it out to the local markets,” stated Historic Sotterley’s Executive Director, Nancy Easterling. “We are able to accept payments under the WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. This is truly a wonderful opportunity for all of us!”

On the Road Again!

Once again, the Historic Sotterley Farmer’s Market is “Going on the Road” on Saturday, May 18th from 9 am—1 pm to the Tobacco Barn Distillery, an 1830’s historic tobacco barn located at 24460 Hollywood Road in Hollywood, MD … less than 4 miles from us and just across the street from Gatton’s Barbershop. With the history, great food from our farmers and watermen, as well as a convenient place to shop, we invite you to come on by!

The Historic Sotterley Farmer’s Market at the Tobacco Barn Distillery will include local farm raised oysters, honey, Shiitake mushrooms, NEW aquaponic grown lettuce, eggs, microgreens, private labelled aged balsamic and extra virgin olive oils, and local bourbon, whiskies and rum. There will also be limited quantities of jumbo lump crab cakes and crab cake dinners from the World Famous Faidley’s Seafood in Baltimore, as well as filets, NY strip, and prime rib from Maryland’s premier dry aged, pasture fed Angus farm.

For those looking to take a “Rickhouse Tour” that afternoon, sign-ups will be available for tours at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Tours are limited to eight people and take about an hour. $30 fee includes a laser etched Glencairn tasting glass.

America’s Bourbon Trail Starts Here!
Tours & Tastings available on Saturday, May 18th. Your visit will consist of an intimate, unrushed educational session led by a knowledgeable member of the Tobacco Barn Distillery team. During these visits, we tell the story of the site, including a description of the history of bourbon making in Maryland that is represented in each bottle.

We offer two levels of tours:

RICKHOUSE TASTING & TOUR
Offered at 1, 2, & 3PM.
Limited to eight people per group.
This personalized experience begins in our Rickhouse with an opportunity to taste “from the barrel” while we discuss Bourbon history, farming and Tobacco Barn Distillery’s sustainable distilling philosophy. Guests will taste four current releases of Tobacco Barn Distillery spirits. Authentic Glencairn whisky glass with our logo included.
$30 per person.

INTRODUCTORY TASTING & TOUR
No appointment required.
Offered 1-5 PM.
The introductory tour begins with a description of the property. You will experience the view of our “Bourbon Farm” from our historic 1830’s tobacco barn. We explain the provenance of the local ingredients in our spirits and how we blend classical farming practices with modern technology to make our spirits. You will taste: Straight Bourbon, Moll Dyer, USS Constellation Rum & Honey Flavored Rum.

Farmer’s Market Going on the Road!

The Historic Sotterley Farmer’s Market is “Going on the Road” on Saturday, April 13th from 9 am—1 pm to the Tobacco Barn Distillery, an 1830’s historic tobacco barn located at 24460 Hollywood Road in Hollywood, MD … less than 4 miles from us and just across the street from Gatton’s Barbershop.

As a special treat, for those looking to take a “Distillery Tour” that afternoon, sign-ups will be available for tours at 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30 pm. Tours are limited to 8 people and take about an hour. $25 fee includes a laser etched Glencairn tasting glass ($15 value).

Meet dog training experts, learn about the latest in keeping your dog healthy, buy presents for your pet, and meet pets who need good homes. We are delighted to introduce our friends from the Animal Relief Fund (ARF), TNT K-9 Trailing, PetValu, and Wag N' Wash! And don't let the rain keep you away - we have plenty of covered spaces. Shop at our Farmer's Market, too! Even if you're not a Sotterley member, we welcome you to walk the trails with your pet for FREE during the event!

Make Mother’s Day Memorable

In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10, 2015, all mothers will receive the Guided Tour of the 1703 Plantation House at Sotterley Plantation for HALF PRICE on their special day!

From noon to 4 p.m., we welcome you and your mother to stroll the blooming Colonial Revival Gardens, walk the plantation grounds and nature trails, see the historic outbuildings including our original 1830’s Slave Cabin, or picnic out on the lawn while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Patuxent River. Top off the day with buying a memorable gift at the Sotterley Museum Shop, located in the Visitor Center. It will be a day she will never forget!

 Speaker Series Event #2:
"Close to the Vest and Under the Skirt" 
Karen Jessee & Thomas William Tear
Sunday, May 17  |  3:00 p.m. in the Barn

The Close to the Vest and Under the Skirt tour of the Civil War is based on Karen Jessee’s Under the Skirt Tour of the Civil War. The program connects women and history with the clothing that tells their story, noted author and re-enactor Thomas William Tear and Karen Jessee bring to life the fashions of the wealthy classes of the mid-1800s.

Thomas Tear is an award-winning writer and author from New Castle, Delaware.  His historic fiction novel, Memoirs of a   Confederate Gentleman, was honored by the Delaware Press Association in 2012. An avid collector of cameos, Victorian hair work jewelry, mourning jewelry and period textiles, Mr. Tear has been involved with the re-enactment community for 10 years. His programs are in high demand with historical societies, schools, women’s clubs and church groups. 

Karen Jessee, from Wilmington, Delaware, is the winner of the NBC National Teacher Award. She is also known for her work with masks and makeup in local theatres and opera. Today,        Ms. Jessee is a professional organizer, writer, and guest speaker on both organizing and women’s historical clothing. Ms. Jessee is also the winner of numerous writing awards from the Delaware Press Association and The National Association of Press Women.

~ The Sotterley Farmer's Market to Begin! ~ 

For the second year running, we further strengthen our strong ties to the Southern Maryland farm community and continue our over 300 year farming tradition as we open up the Sotterley Farmer’s Market – a producer only farmer’s market – on Saturday, May 23, 2015! Every Saturday running from May 23 through September 26 between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the public is invited to the Historic Sotterley Plantation grounds to shop local. Purchase the best quality home-grown vegetables, fruit, and plants, as well as unique, hand-crafted items.

After buying wonderful local produce, we hope our guests will also stay in order to take advantage of our site’s beauty, nature trails, and history. Visitors need only to check in at the Visitor Center, then they can enjoy themselves hiking and touring the site – and remember that Sotterley members get in free! Leashed dogs are welcome on our nature trails.

Sotterley is still currently accepting applications from quality local vendors interested in featuring only locally grown and produced products - vegetables, fruit, honey, eggs, and more.
