The Real Story of K-129!

Speaker Series #5
“The Taking of K-129”
by Josh Dean

Wednesday, September 19, 2018
7:00 p.m. in the Barn

In early 1968, a Soviet ballistic missile submarine went missing in a remote area of the Pacific and despite a furious search, the Soviet Navy was unable to locate it. The United States Navy, however, was able to locate the wreck and decided this was an intelligence haul too great to pass up. The job of salvaging the sub was given to the CIA’s burgeoning Directorate of Science and Technology and thus began Project Azorian, a massive five year covert operation that produced one of the greatest feats of engineering in history. Author Josh Dean will discuss the operation, and the incredible cover story developed by the CIA to disguise it.
